The first quarter-finalists: Pope John’s Senior High & Seminary, St John’s School (Top right) and Presbyterian Boys’ SHS (Down right)

It was victory for boys’ schools on the first day of the one-eighth stage of the 2019 National Science and Maths Quiz as Pope John’s Senior High and Seminary School, Presbyterian Boys’ SHS-Legon and St John’s School from Sekondi sailed through to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Pojoss started it all on the day, pushing aside Notre Dame Girls’ SHS and regional revivals Koforidua SHTS.

Ironically, the Sec-Tech Boys led after Round 1, garnering 17 points against Notre Dame’s 13 points and Pope John’s 12.

All three schools failed to score a single point in the Problem of the Day section as Koforidua SHTS lost grounds.

It was in Round 4 that the ‘men’ from Effiduase were separated from the boys and girls. Pojoss led by 2 points.

They made the riddles count answering the last one to see off their opponents. The contest ended 36 points for Pojoss, 23 for Notre Dame Girls’ and 18 for Koforidua SHTS.

Presec all the way!

The second contest for the day saw the eventual winners also lagging behind after Round 1. Assin State College and Ofori Panin SHS were leading in that order.

But the Odade3 Boys proved that they are five-time champions as they jumped to the top in Round 2. They managed 4 points from the Problem of the Day against zilch for Assin State College and OPASS.

At the end of the contest, PRESEC won by a total of 47 points. Assin State College and OPASS amassed 31 and 25 points to place second and third respectively.

St John’s dominate!

The final contest for the day saw St John’s School dominate from the first round. Tamale Islamic Science SHS and Archbishop Porter Girls’ SHS trailed the boys from the Western Region.

Though they did not get enough points from the Problem of the Day, the Saints went on to carry the day with 38 points.

Tamale Islamic Science SHS took the second position while St John’s sister school Archbishop Porter Girls’ SHS placed third on 22 points.

On Tuesday, St Ignatius of Loyola SHS will come up against Berekum SHS and Kumasi SHTS in the first contest.

That will be followed by the Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS-Asamankese SHS-University Practice SHS contest.

The final contest for the day will be an all-Ashanti Region affair as Osei Kyeretwie SHS, Kumasi Anglican SHS and Opoku Ware School face off.
