President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has observed that although Ghana’s economy is challenged, Ghanaians ought to be grateful because the country is not as doomed as it is happening elsewhere in the world.
Addressing this year’s 66th Independence Day Parade at Adaklu in the Volta region, Monday, the president noted that, for instance, fuel can be accessed at the pumps without queuing for it.
According to him, the global economy is in dire situation but Ghana has been able to steer away from crashing.
“Maybe we should also count our blessings and how together, we are managing the difficulties. We’ve all seen the images around the world. Here in Ghana, we have not had any fuel queues. We have not suffered shortages in food and essential items or the catastrophe of dumsor,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.
He also assured Ghanaians of his administration’s resolve in finding solutions to the current problems confronting the nation.
“We are working hard to resolve them,” he promised.
He recalled that but for the advent of the deadly covid-19, Ghana’s economy was on the right path.
“The next 22 months of my mandate will be focused on restoring the economy we had before COVID and the Russian invasion of Ukraine to a period of rapid growth. It is a solemn pledge I am making to you, my fellow Ghanaians, and one which I am determined to fulfil,” President Akufo-Addo declared.
This year’s Independence Anniversary is on the theme: “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose”.
President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea Bissau, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was the Special Guest of Honour.
More than 5,000 people from across the country, including members of the diplomatic corps, the clergy, traditional rulers and other dignitaries participated in the event.
A total of 22 contingents from the various security agencies and 12 from the various schools in the Volta Region were on parade, aside other performances. The 66 Artillery Regiment in Ho was in charge of the march past.
In 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo decided the independence celebration be held on rotational basis to open the regions to the world to boost the local economy.
