Some residents of Sefwi on Monday blocked a portion of the Benchema-Osei Kojokrom road and burnt car tyres in protest against government for stopping work on the project.
They want the government to immediately bring the contractor back on site.
The angry residents threatened that if government does not meet their demands within one month, they will resort to smuggling cocoa to Ivory Coast.
Speaking to TV3‘s Komla Klutse on Monday, October 28, Chief of Sefwi Kantankrubo Nana Ekyea Kwame II said after Ghana was upgraded to a middle income country, the Netherlands government, which had hitherto been assisting in the construction of feeders roads within cocoa-producing communities, stopped the drive.
He said it is better to travel from the town to adjoining Ivory Coast with harvested cocoa than to travel on the bad roads to mainland Ghana.
Nana Ekyea Kwame II led demonstrators to present a petition to the District Chief Executive of Juaboso.
A part of the petition lamented how the project has become a feature of several budgets over the years – even in the 2019 edition – but “we are in October and there is no sign to develop it”.
“The lives of the entire communities largely depend on farming. The dilapidated nature of the road has made has made it impossible for the people to transport their agricultural produce to the nearby markets in Asawinso and Dwinase.”
