The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee and Tano North Member of Parliament (MP), Dr Gideon Boako, has argued that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy should continue to be financed through domestic revenue rather than borrowed funds.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Dr Boako said government must demonstrate its commitment to education by allocating sufficient locally generated revenue to sustain the programme.
“We want to ask the Finance Minister what government is doing and why we are not able to raise revenue to support education but we have to go and borrow to finance Free SHS,” he said.
He contrasted the current approach with that of the previous administration, adding, “The Free SHS that was introduced by the erstwhile administration didn’t resort to borrowing to finance it. The Ghanaian people want to see the government prioritising education and thereby prioritising Free SHS.”
Dr Boako made the remarks during parliamentary proceedings, insisting that improving domestic revenue mobilisation remains the most sustainable way to finance Ghana’s flagship education programme.
