The eight female students of Chiana Senior High School in the Kassena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region, who were dismissed for insulting President Akufo-Addo, have now been referred to the school’s disciplinary committee to proffer alternative punishment.
The students were dismissed in November last year but the decision was only announced to them when schools reopened on January 10, 2023 after they were found guilty of misconducting themselves and using vulgar and unprintable words which were directed at President Akufo-Addo.
Their dismissal by the Ghana Education Service (GES) attracted mixed reactions.
But when the president’s attention was drawn to the development, he intervened and asked the GES to reconsider the decision.
The affected students together with their parents have asked for clemency and pleaded with President Akufo-Addo to immediately intervene to enable the GES to rescind the decision.
The Education Ministry announced that the sector minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum was directed to takeover the case and “consider an alternative disciplinary action instead of dismissal”.
The GES have subsequently issued a press release acknowledging the president’s intervention as well as disclosing that the decision to dismiss the girls was recommended by the school’s disciplinary committee.
However, the statement signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of Public Relations, on Friday said “Management has referred the matter to the school’s Disciplinary Committee to explore alternative sanctions other than dismissal”.
In the meantime, it said, the affected students are to report to the Headmistress of the School for further directions.
“Management acknowledges the interest of stakeholders in ensuring that these students are reformed in the best possible way.
