Government is set to run the country’s hydroelectric power sources alongside solar energy as the Energy Ministry signs a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ENI Ghana.
The terms of the MoU will see ENI Ghana develop a solar power component at the Bui hydropower facility as well as the other hydropower facilities that are managed by the Volta River Authority (VRA).
Already the Bui Power Authority has a vision of adding 250 Mega Watts of solar energy to the 400 MW produced by its hydro facility.
This was disclosed at the signing of the MoU on renewable energy with ENI Ghana, a private energy production company.
The Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, outlined the importance of the deal for the Ghana.
“It will allow us to manage the reservoir much better,” he said.
“If we put the PV panels on the water bodies largely, then we save the situation of land use. Our waters will get more cooler, cooler water means more oxygen, more oxygen means more planktons, more planktons means more fish.”
On his part the Executive Vice President of ENI Ghana, Luka Cozentino, expressed the commitment of his group to developing renewable energy in Ghana, indicating Ghana is well positioned to make good use of renewable energy.
“I can tell you that ENI is more committed. We believe that Ghana has natural resources, has the maturity, the political maturity to do this…to step into this process.”
