Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama says his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has also been caught in the web of anomalies that have characterized the ongoing voter exhibition exercise.
“In the Central Region, glaring cases of duplication of card numbers were also recorded in 14 centers in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Constituency.
“And one of such cases involved my running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang,” Mr Mahama told journalists in Accra on Thursday, September 24.
He explained that Prof Opoku-Agyemang was asked to get to the district office with her card to have it replaced.
“Being who she is, she could make the trip to Elmina. What of the poor farmer in the village who comes and finds out that their card is not valid.
“Are they going to travel to Elmina to replace the card?”
The NDC has raised concerns about the register, particularly during exhibition.
This has led to the suspension of the campaigns by Mr Mahama and Prof Opoku-Agyemang.
They want the right thing to be done as the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has not the luxury of time to toy with such a grave issue, the NDC stresses.
The former president cited Ketu South, Karaga, Tamale South, Tolon, Binduri, Anlo, Akatsi South and Ketu North as some of the constituencies with missing names.
“Yet another anomaly has been detected which revolves around the appearance of additional names on the register which have served to swell it.”
He cited Asawase as a case in point.
He said this is just a fraction of the magnitude of problems encountered so far and it gives the NDC cause for concern especially as regards the credibility of the register.
At an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Thursday, the EC assured political parties that the anomalies will be remedied.
It has also extended by two days the voter registration exercise.
