The Ghana Police Service in the Bono Region has announced the arrest of 24 suspects and the recovery of a cache of weapons following a joint intelligence-led security operation in Sampa Township.
According to a statement issued by the Bono Regional Police Command on March 21, 2026, the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, specifically the 3rd Infantry Battalion, and the Bureau of National Intelligence (Ghana). The exercise formed part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to clamp down on illegal arms and criminal activity in the region.
The early morning operation led to the retrieval of eight assorted firearms, including five pump-action guns, one Baikal gun and two locally manufactured weapons. Officers also recovered 790 rounds of AAA and BB cartridges, an AK-47 round, and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.
Additional exhibits seized during the operation included machetes, bayonets, clubs, knives and military-style clothing, as well as body armour, mobile phones, motorbikes and what police described as talismans. Authorities said the items are being held as evidence to support ongoing investigations.
Police confirmed that the suspects, whose ages range from 13 to 78, are currently in custody assisting with investigations. Among them, two individuals were specifically arrested for breaching curfew regulations in the area.
The Command noted that the coordinated operation was part of a broader strategy to rid the region of weapons and deter criminal networks operating within local communities. Officials emphasised that intelligence gathering and inter-agency cooperation remain critical tools in addressing emerging security threats.
While investigations continue, police say preparations are underway to arraign the suspects before court.
The Bono Regional Police Command has appealed to the public to support ongoing security efforts by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of individuals involved in illegal arms possession and related offences.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring residents that sustained operations will be carried out to enhance safety and protect lives and property across the region.
