The Korle-Bu Doctors Association (KODA) has suspended its industrial action at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), barely 18 hours after the strike commenced on Monday, May 4, 2026.
In a formal letter addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of KBTH and signed by Chairman Dr. Asare Offei, the Association announced the suspension following an emergency meeting held on the same day the strike began.
“The Korle-Bu Doctors Association (KODA) is formally notifying management and the public of suspension of the strike action commenced this morning; Monday 4 May 2026,” the letter stated.
The suspension follows specific guarantees provided by Korle-Bu management to address the core grievances of the doctors, key among them being the commitment to ensure that laboratory physicians can return to their designated places of work without hindrance.
“We believe the peaceful coexistence of Laboratory Physicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists at the Central Laboratory is best for quality healthcare delivery,” Dr. Offei stated in the letter.
All KODA members have been directed to resume outpatient services from Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
At the centre of the dispute was the alleged exclusion of Laboratory Physicians — specialists including pathologists, haematologists, and microbiologists — from the hospital’s Central Laboratory, with KODA alleging that members of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) had unlawfully restricted their colleagues’ access to the facility, disrupting specialist clinical services and undermining postgraduate medical training.
