Legon Cities upbeat ahead of AshGold clash

The management at Legon Cities Football Club are putting in the work. Hard work that is visible to many.

The on-field results though, have not quite matched the noise on social media and the strides they have made to look markedly better than every other team in the country.

The Royals have picked up two points from a possible 9 which has been the result of their shabby second half performances.

Although the fixtures have been tough, they have looked positive in the opening stages only to miss out on a chance of killing games off when they have to.

“The energy levels of our players are low and we will need some three or four games to get back and hitting teams hard,” the club’s Bosnian coach Goran Barjectarevic said after they lost their first home game of the season to Asante Kotoko.

Ahead of Wednesday’s fixture against Ashanti Gold, Barjectarevic sounds overly confident of a win.

He walked into his pre-match press conference in high spirits.

Shoulders lifted up in the air, spoke boldly and gave that sense for once since he has been here that he is actually settling into the hustle and bustle of Accra.

He spoke with a lot of conviction on what he could do for the club as well.

“If I say this, it sounds arrogant but it’s not. I can really read the game of the clubs very fast and I know exactly how they play. I know what to expect from them and I know why they are up there in the standings.”

This response sounded quite haughty but it was clearly a statement of intent. One to tell anyone that “I know my stuff and I am here to build a team and to accumulate points”.

Barjakterevic may have not been so successful as player given that he played for teams in Germany’s lower leagues but his years on coaching and nurturing young players in that scene could be his trump card here.

He faces another tough opponent tonight in Obuasi Ashanti Gold who have been menacing this season.

A tough game that could push their chances of picking up a first win of the season back further.

But the Royals coach is unfazed.

“I expect my players to play and express themselves on the pitch. I want them to win because if you are a sportsman you would always want to win and that’s a mark of a true sportsman.”

It is still early days in the league but there isn’t any side in the Premier league now that needs a win more than Legon Cities Football Club and hopefully the stars will align for them tonight.

If it does not happen, the ever impatient Ghanaian fandom will draw out their pitchforks and start shining them.
