Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) gathered at La Bawaleshie Presby School in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency on Friday, January 31 to mark the first anniversary of the by-election which was riddled with violence.
In attendance were victims of the violence.
Speaking at the ceremony, former President John Dramani Mahama took a jab at the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, calling all patriots to be concerned about his attitude.
“My brothers and sisters, anyone who professes to love Ghana, the only country that we all have, should be concerned about the president’s actions, which have almost certainly emboldened these criminal elements within his government and party to attempt more attacks against political opponents especially with the 2020 elections just about 10 months away,” he told the gathering.
He said the president failed to show leadership, which was what the NDC showed that day by withdrawing from the elections.
For him, it was by the grace of God that fatalities were not recorded.
“If you looked at the number of bullets that were discharged on that day, to think that not a single person died, it is only God’s intervention that prevented it.”
Mr Mahama said the NDC was later justified by the fact that the incident during that by-election was a dress rehearsal for subsequent ones, the topmost of which is the 2020 polls.
“Why must any responsible government compromise the security of the nation by infiltrating the security set-up with militia members forming the core of a specialized SWAT Unit that the IGP, under whose command they should fall, confess that he knew nothing about.”
The NDC flagbearer says doom awaits the country if the current structure of the national security remains the same.
