A six-to-six curfew has been imposed on residents of Bole and its environs in the Bole District of the Northern Region after a violent clash during a festival celebration Sunday led to the death of one person.

Three others from the two feuding factions in the area were injured, but the Police say they are responding to treatment.

The curfew, which has been in effect since 6:00pm Monday, is to prevent reprisal and ensure peace in the area.

As part of the curfew, residents in the affected area are banned from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapon.

“Any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted,” a statement issued by the Interior Ministry to announce the curfew warned.

It also called on the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, and them to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.

Meanwhile the Northern Regional Police Command has welcomed the curfew, noting it will help the police and military personnel on the ground to ensure nothing untoward takes place in the night.

“This curfew is very timely because we are picking intelligence that people are trying to use the cover of darkness to perpetuate more crime,” Northern Regional Police PRO, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko said on 3FM.

Narrating what triggered the chieftaincy violence, he said the Mandari faction Sunday night celebrated their Damba festival and during the celebration “we understand somebody from the opposing side fired into the gathering killing this person and injuring two others”.

This caused someone from the Mandari faction to also return fire and injured one person from the other faction, the police said.

“We found out that one person is dead and three persons are injured and they are responding to treatment at the hospital,” DSP Tanko said.
