Health workers at the Navrongo Health Centre have threatened to suspend healthcare services if urgent steps are not taken to address worsening sanitary conditions at the facility.
The warning follows the dismissal of all casual staff, including cleaners, leaving the health centre without essential cleaning support. As a result, workers say the facility has become increasingly unhygienic, posing serious health risks to both patients and staff.
Speaking anonymously for fear of victimisation, some staff described the conditions as dire, citing the accumulation of filth over several days due to the absence of cleaning. They warned that the situation could become a breeding ground for infections.
“We are already working under stressful conditions with limited resources. Now we are expected to operate in an environment that puts our lives and those of our clients at even greater risk,” said one staff member.
Another added:
“The authorities want us to come and sweep the place ourselves when in fact we have to be attending to sick patients. How can we combine the two?”
The staff are calling on the municipal health authorities to urgently reinstate cleaning staff or find alternative solutions to restore sanitary conditions and prevent a total shutdown of services.
Local community members, who rely heavily on the Navrongo Health Centre for medical care, also voiced concern, urging authorities to intervene immediately before the situation worsens.
When contacted, the municipal health authorities acknowledged the issue and confirmed plans to engage with staff to find a sustainable resolution.
