Keta Port to be ready within a year and a half – GPHA Director reveals

Construction work on a port at Keta in the Volta Region is expected to begin soon, Director General of the Ghana Ports and Habours Authority, Paul Asare Ansah has announced.

He said preliminary work has begun on the project, noting all the necessary documentations and arrangements would be completed by December this year to enable actual work to commence in earnest.

Barring any last minute changes, he said, the new port will be ready within a year-and-a-half.

“In the next year or the next one-and-a-half years we will be able to commission a port in the Volta Region,” he told Bright Kwasi Asempa on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa Wednesday morning.

He revealed they have signed an agreement with the Indian company producing Diamond Cement in the Volta Region for it to lead the construction of the port.

The construction of the Keta port, he said, would bring to an end the importation of klinker and other goods into the country through neighbouring Togo.

The Director General also said some investors have also been in touch with the Authority to have a refinery connect to the port.

He was hopeful that the construction of the port and the subsequent investment would create a number of jobs for the people of Ghana particularly in the Volta Region, stating that “the future is bright”

“We will start this year. By December we would have concluded with all documentations and the necessary arrangements, so by the end of next year, we are expecting to start Keta Port if nothing changes” Mr. Anasah assured.

“Now that we have people who will use the port, there is nothing preventing us from going ahead with the construction,” he explained.
