The biggest casualty in the one-eighth contest of the National Science and Maths Quiz so far was recorded on Friday, June 28 as former winners St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School were ousted.
The Cantonments boys failed to progress to the quarter-final after losing the final round of their contest to Achimota School.
Aquinas won the contest in 2013 and finished runners-up to Prempeh College in 2017.
Though overtaking Achimota School before the final round, Aquinas failed to answer any of the riddles in the final round, allowing Achimota School – who answered two on the trot – to leapfrog them.
The loss delays the much-anticipated revenge of the 2017 final as the Greater Accra Region school would have faced off with Prempeh College in the next round.
Achimota amassed a total of 31 points to win the day. Aquinas were three points behind them with Nkwatia Presbyterian SHS coming third on 24 points.
Before that contest, Prempeh College laboured to a win over Labone SHS and Atebubu SHS.
With 25 points, the four-time champions booked a ticket to the quarter-final. Labone and Atebubu schools were on 17 points apiece.
The last contest for the day saw Wesley Girls High School lifting high the flag of girls’ schools in the competition.
They brushed aside Akwamuman SHS and Breman Asikuma SHS to stride into the quarter-finals.
They ended with 55 points against Akwamuman’s 24 points and Breman Asikuma’s 14.
Gey Hey will face Prempeh College and Achimota School for a place in the semi-finals.
