The Ghana Police Service in the Oti Region has intercepted a large quantity of ammunition during two separate intelligence-led security operations in Nkwanta.

According to a statement issued by the Regional Police Headquarters in Dambai on May 17, 2026, the first operation involved a night patrol team stationed at a security checkpoint in Nkwanta. Officers stopped and searched a 66-seater MGI passenger bus with registration number AS 248-P.

Police said the search uncovered 750 live J/G cartridges concealed in a black polythene bag containing three brown boxes, each loaded with 250 rounds of ammunition.

During preliminary interrogation, a suspect identified as 53-year-old Hudu Mahama, who was serving as the driver’s mate on the bus, allegedly admitted ownership of the ammunition. He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody to assist investigations.

In a separate operation conducted the same day, a joint police and military patrol team pursued a motorbike rider suspected of transporting ammunition. During the chase, a box reportedly fell from the motorbike, leading to the recovery of 125 AA cartridges and 125 BB cartridges, bringing the total recovered in that operation to 250 rounds.

The unidentified rider, however, escaped with another box believed to contain additional ammunition.

Police said preliminary investigations linked the recovered box to a second suspect, identified as 57-year-old Christian Kwasi Alonise, who was later arrested.

Authorities confirmed that both suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. The recovered ammunition has been retained as evidence, and security personnel are continuing efforts to trace the escaped rider and retrieve the missing box.

The joint security team reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security within the area through sustained intelligence-led operations.
