The Ghana Police Service in the Northern Region has launched an investigation into a reported assault on visual artist Ibrahim Mahama in Tamale.
In a press release issued on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the Northern Regional Police Command confirmed that the incident allegedly involved some police officers. Authorities said the investigation is underway and assured the public that updates will be communicated as developments unfold.
The Command also addressed circulating media reports linking the incident to the Special Operations Team, popularly known as the “Black Maria.” Police described those claims as false, clarifying that the unit is not currently operating in the region.
According to the statement, the Special Operations Team had been withdrawn from the Northern Region by the Inspector-General of Police on March 5, 2026, and therefore could not have been involved in the alleged incident.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, emphasising that all necessary steps will be taken to establish the facts surrounding the case.
Authorities urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while investigations continue into the reported assault.
