Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education Professor Kwesi Yankah has lashed out at journalists for escalating the crisis at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
He said for the past two or so years, UEW has witnessed tranquility.
However, the media muddied the waters on the back of the removal of Professor Mawutor Avoke as Vice Chancellor, he said.
Prof Avoke’s controversial removal was met with legal action by some staff.
Rev Prof Anthony Afful-Broni was appointed to replace him.
But there was a demonstration by students on Tuesday to have Rev Prof Afful-Broni removed following his dismissal of two senior lecturers.
The lecturers – Dr Frimpong Kaakyire Duku and Prof Avea Nsoh – were said to have initiated a legal action in support of Prof Avoke against the University’s rules.
Speaking to Onua FM’s Central Region correspondent Kwame Kakarba after a closed-door meeting with the Governing Council, Prof Yankah said the media have blacked out issues that promote development at UEW.
He said the Education Ministry has directed the Council to settle the issues with the students amicably.
Prof Yankah said the institution trains teachers so government is bent on nipping any impasse in the bud.
He said management has been given a three-day ultimate to meet and report back to the Ministry.
Avoiding KNUST case
Meanwhile, the Ministry says it does not want the issues to escalate into what happened at the Kwame Nkrumah Science and Technology (KNUST) last year.
Students of KNUST embarked upon a violent demonstration, leading to its closure for close to a fortnight.
A Public Relations Officer at the Ministry, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, told TV3 on Tuesday on News 360 that the high-powered delegation was led by Prof Yankah so the administration’s side is heard.
He said the delegation will immediately meet the Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, upon return to Accra for a decision to be taken.
