Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Constituency Ras Mubarak has made a U-turn over his decision to vote ‘Yes’ in the upcoming referendum in contrast to his party’s position.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting called on its numerous supporters to vote ‘No’ in the referendum, which seeks to allow – or not – the introduction of party politics in district level elections.
But Alhaji Mubarak took a dissenting stance by backing a ‘Yes’ vote, same as the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Minority Leader of Parliament Haruna Iddrisu had earlier cautioned all members to back NDC’s position as a matter of course.
“Upon a sober reflection and advice from very distinguished senior party members, especially the Parliamentary leadership, I have come to the conclusion that it is improper to deviate from my party’s official position for a NO vote in the upcoming referendum on Article 55(3) of constitution,” the Kumbungu MP said in a statement on Tuesday.
“I recognize that my personal position must be subsumed under the broader interest of the party.
“I have therefore decided to uphold the party’s position for a NO vote on the matter.”
The referendum is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, December 17.
Already, opinions are divided over which way to go.
