Most shops have closed as per a directive from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs as security officers join Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for the start of the two-day national clean-up exercise.
The exercise was called by President John Dramani Mahama following the recent floods that left many areas not only in Accra but other regional capitals in filth.
The exercise is scheduled between 6:00am and 1:00pm each day.
The general public with the support of the security agencies and waste-management companies will follow on Saturday.
“To ensure full participation and the effective execution of the exercise, all shops, markets, commercial establishments, corporate organisations and other non-essential businesses within the affected regions shall remain closed between 6:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on both days,” the Local Government Ministry said in a statement prior to the exercise.
“Institutions providing essential and emergency services are exempt.”
Already, mmost telecommunication companies have sent messages to their customers about the closure of their shops in affected areas, urging them to resort to online customer care assistants.
“Dear Customer, due to a planned National Cleanup Exercise, AT shops will operate from 1pm-5pm on Fri the 10th and Sat the 11th of July 2026,” a message from AT notes.
“For support, contact us on 100 and all social media channels. Inconvenience is deeply regretted.”
