St Charles Minor Seminary wants support to renovate two burnt dormitories

Authorities at St Charles Minor Seminary Senior High School in Tamale have appealed to government and other organizations to support the school in renovating two of its dormitory blocks which were burnt to ashes in 2017.

Two dormitories accommodating over 700 students were burnt in 2017 and has since not been renovated.

Headmaster of the school, Polycarp Kuusokub Beyelle, said the situation has affected enrollment and other academic activities.

He said the two dormitories are yet to get any attention though the government has been notified about the situation at the school.

“The situation is affecting us a lot. We only admitted about 150 this academic year because of our situation” he said.

When 3news.com visited the school, dormitories and classrooms were overcrowded.

The Archbishop of Tamale, Most Reverend Philip Naameh, who was not happy with the situation, said the Catholic church has been pushing government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding which will ensure the effective management of the school.

He explained that under the MoU, government is expected to absorb the infrastructural needs of the school while the church takes care of the schools administration, but he said government has not signed it for the past 5 years despite assurances.

The old students association of the school have meanwhile raised concern on the state of the school.

They want government to respond immediately to the plight of students, especially as it is making strides in the Free Senior High education.

Meanwhile, the 1999 batch of the Saint Charles Old Students Association (SCOBA) has handed over a refurbished science laboratory to school authorities.

The project which is valued at 30,000 cedis is equipped with state of the art fire extinguishing systems.

The lab has a smoke detector and a 10-litre per hour distiller with the capacity to generate enough distilled water for students’ practical work.
