Two persons have been arrested at Accrape in the East Gonja municipality of the Savanna Region for allegedly trafficking three children.
The suspects, Amervor Awunyo, 30 and Kwesi Vivor Awunyo, 45, are alleged to have trafficked the children from Afloa in the Volta region.
According the suspects, they brought the victims to Accrape to put them in school, but police investigation has revealed they were using the children, aged between six and 15 years, for fishing.
The Salaga District Police Commander DSP David Kofi-Kumah told 3news.com that they received intelligence that some children were being trafficked from Afloa to the Accrape.
A police rescue team was deployed around 1:00am Monday, November 25 to Accrape.
When the team arrived at the place, the commander said, the suspects had gone fishing with the victims and had to wait for them to return.
The two suspects were identified as the traffickers and arrested.
“The victims (names withheld) aged between 15, 8 and 6 were also rescued by the team and brought to Salaga with the suspects,” DSP Kofi-Kumah said.
DSP Kofi-Kumah said preliminary investigation has revealed the children have been in Accrape with the suspects since June this year.
“The children have told us they have been fishing since they arrived and they stay late on the lake,” the commander said.
He said one of the suspects, who is a fish monger, managed to escape.
The two suspects have since been charged with human trafficking and will be put before Tamale Circuit Court on November 26.
“The victims have since been transported to a shelter home in Tamale,” he said.
