British boxer Tyson Fury is the new WBC heavyweight champion.
He beat American Deontay Wilder in a seventh round technical knock-out (TKO) on Sunday to claim the World Boxing Council title.
Before sending the the former champion to the canvas, Fury knocked him down twice in the third and fifth round.
In a packed MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Fury dominated on all three judges’ scorecard.
Dave Moretti, Glenn Fieldman and Steve Welsfeld all gave it to the Briton for his dominant display.
But he believes Wilder could bounce back.
“[Wilder] came here tonight and he manned up and he really did show the heart of a champion,” Fury said after the victory.
“I hit him with a clean right that dropped him and he got back up. He is a warrior. He will be back. He will be champion again.”
Wilder, on the other hand, was gracious in defeat and he promised to be back.
“Even the greatest have lost and came back, that is just part of it. You just take it for what it is. I can make no excuses tonight. I had a lot of complications. But we’ll come back stronger next time around. This is what big-time boxing is all about, the best must fight the best. I appreciate all the fans that came out and supported the show, and I hope that everyone gets home safely.”
All what boxing fights may be looking forward to is a Fury-Anthony Joshua fight and already the latter’s promoter has hinted of such, maybe this year.
