The College of Health Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has presented 200, 000 cedis worth of medical consumables to 11 hospitals in the Ashanti region.
The consumables will support clinical training of medical students at the various health facilities.
The items include 5,000 boxes of examination gloves, 1000 boxes of surgical gloves, 3000 pieces of hand sanitizers, and 500 boxes of disposable boots and caps each.
Presenting the items to the hospitals, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Yaw Adu Sarkodie said the university will continue supporting the hospitals for quality training of students.
“These consumables are often in short supply in most health facilities designated for clinical training for our medical students due to their increasing number. For this reason, the university decided to support the 11 health facilities with the consumables to aid in quality clinical training
Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso also said the university intends increasing the number of medical students, hence its partnership with some private hospitals to absorb the students.
“We have to partner some private health facilities with the increasing number of our students because KATH and other government hospitals are getting choked in offering clinical trainings for them.
“And because training goes with certain facilities and consumables, the university thought it wise to meet the facilities half-way with the consumables to ease their burden”, Prof Obiri-Danso noted.
Representative of the beneficiary institutions, Dr Kwadwo Sarbeng from KATH, commended management of KNUST for the support.
“We appreciate it because now with the numbers that is going up, the use of consumables and other items in the wards is also increasing. These items will go a long way to improve on training so that students can get the opportunity to have more hands-on training.”
- The beneficiary hospitals are the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Suntreso, Manhyia, Ejura, Ejisu, Wiamoase and Tafo Government Hospitals, and the Maternal and Child Health hospital.
Others are the KNUST Hospital, Kumasi South Hospital and Asokwa Children’s Hospital.
