Three Ghanaians have been injured in the renewed xenophobic attacks on foreigners in South Africa, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has announced.
Though details on the nature of injury were not given in the statement issued a while ago, the Ministry said Ghana’s Mission in Pretoria, South Africa, is working to give the three persons “the necessary medical attention”.
Meanwhile, information from the Mission has revealed five other Ghanaians have been arrested and being detained at the Sunnyside Police Station over their resident permits.
They were arrested during a September 5 exercise by the South African Security Agencies to check the resident permits of foreigners residing in Sunnyside, a suburb of Pretoria.
“Officials of the High Commission have visited the Police Station to provide consular assistance to the detained Ghanaians and are following up on the matter,” the statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry stated.
It said Ghana’s Mission has been sending “regular updates and advice” to the leadership of the Ghanaian communities in the various South African provinces “about the need to remain calm and stay away from crowded places and large gatherings”.
“The Ministry wishes to urge the good people of this country to remain calm as we seek the interest of our nationals who are caught up in this situation and an end to the unrest,” it appealed.
