A 34-year-old Science and ICT teacher at the Akwatia St Dominic Junior High School in the Easter region, Sabina Koba Dosu, has been adjudged the Most Outstanding Teacher for 2019.
She was awarded with a three-bedroom house worth one hundred and eighty thousand Ghana cedis (GHC180,000).
Addressing the gathering at the Ghana Teacher Prize 2019 at the Paa Joe stadium in Kumasi, Vice President Dr Mahmoud Bawumia conceded that teachers still have challenges that need to be addressed.
He however reaffirmed government’s commitment to empower and enhance the working condition of teachers across the country.
“We must and will continue to strive to make life better and more dignified for teachers. In line with government efforts to empower teachers to better their professional and social lives, the Ministry of Education and its agencies with support from development partners is collaborating with Norwegian teacher initiative to develop a comprehensive teacher policy”.
Comprehensive Sexual Education
Minister of Education, Mathew Opoku Prempeh said the controversial Comprehensive Sexual Education was part of classroom agenda even before the Nana-Addo-led government came into office.
“It is a fact that manuals in teaching the CSE started in 2015. The CSE was part of the classroom agenda before President Nana Addo came to office. But cabinet has currently not approved any guidelines for CSE in Ghana”
Executive Secretary of National Teaching Council, Christian Addai-Poku, called for improved working condition for teachers.
He commended government for the introduction of the new curriculum to address the global learning crisis.
Over 50 teachers across the country were honoured for their outstanding performance in their line of duty during this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize by the National Teaching Council.
Others winners
Philipa Darko, a teacher at State Experimental in the Ashanti region came second. She was presented with a Mitsubishi pickup.
Female teacher at the Yombi Special School for the intellectually disabled in the Northern Region, Christiana Yeyeh, was adjudged the third Most Outstanding Teacher.
She went home with a Hyundai saloon car.
Other award winners receive fridges, laptops, flat screens, and other assorted prizes
The overall winner, Sabina Koba Dosu, commended government for recognising their contribution.
She said it will encourage her and her colleagues to do more.
