Commercial rail passenger services from Takoradi to Tarkwa in the Western Region will commence from February 5, the Ghana Railways Company has announced.
It follows the completion of rehabilitation works on the Takoradi to Tarkwa rail line and successful test runs.
Passenger service on the narrow-gauge line had been out of service since September 2007.
The rehabilitation of the Takoradi to Tarkwa rail line which started a year ago by the government of Ghana, forms part of the development of the Western rail lines.
A statement issued Saturday by the Ghana Railways Company Limited said several tests runs conducted on the rail line with the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) proved the suitability of line for passenger services.
“After the test runs, GRDA has given certification for the Ghana Railway Company Limited to commence passenger services on the line”, the statement said.
Consequently, the Ghana Railway Company Limited has resolved to start the passenger service by offering a three-day free passenger services from Takoradi to Tarkwa on January 28, 30 and 31.
“The train will depart from Takoradi Station to Tarkwa at 6:15am and depart from Tarkwa Station to Takoradi at 3:00pm each day” it said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Railway Company has indicated there will be occasional interruption in operations for contractors to undertake civil works.
“Currently, the Western line is being developed and occasionally there will be the need for GRCL to stop operations to enable the contractor do some civil works on the line,” it said.
