Former president John Mahama’s bid to lead the National Democratic Congress into the 2020 general elections appears to be taking shape as certified results of the party’s primary released so far by the Electoral Commission puts him in a comfortable lead.

With more than 10 results declared by the EC at the respective constituencies across the country, Mahama leads with overwhelming gap with some of the six other contestants getting either a single digit or zero votes at some constituencies.

  • Mahama sweeps 750 votes at Bole-Bamboi; Spio, Goosie, Sly Mensah get zero

The results so far are lending credence to predictions that Mahama who lost power to Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2020 general elections will win the presidential primary which was conducted in the 275 constituencies nationwide.

The seven candidates

Election watchers have predicted a straight win for the former president Mahama but the margin, which establishes his popularity in the party, is what they are observing in today’s exercise.

  • Who leads NDC in 2020? Party decides on Mahama, six others

Many were expecting the other six contestants, particularly Prof. Joshua Alabi and Goosie Tanoh to pull a surprise, that appears unlikely, at least judging from the results coming in after the close of polls
