The 64th Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has reintroduced a flagship welfare policy to provide free meals for students admitted at the University Hospital.
The initiative was formalized on Sunday, October 18, when the SRC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Directorate of University Health Services to fully absorb the cost of three square meals daily for all students on admission at the UCC Hospital.
The MoU was signed by the SRC President, Emmanuel Nana Adjei Acheampong, and Vice President Ms. Regina Yayra Adenyo on behalf of the student body, and the Director of University Health Services, Dr. James K. Prah, on behalf of the hospital administration.
Under the agreement, any UCC student admitted at the University Hospital will automatically be catered for at no cost to the student for the entire duration of their admission.
Speaking after the signing, SRC President Emmanuel Nana Adjei Acheampong said the policy is rooted in the SRC’s commitment to student welfare and health equity.
“Health challenges should not come with additional financial burden. Many students struggle to afford proper nutrition while on admission, which affects their recovery. As a student leadership that listens, we are ensuring that no student has to worry about what to eat while receiving treatment. This is student welfare in action,” he said.
The Director of University Health Services, Dr. James K. Prah, commended the SRC for the intervention, describing it as timely and humane.
He assured that the hospital administration will ensure strict accountability and quality delivery of meals to beneficiaries.
The SRC executives also extended their profound appreciation to the Dean of Students, Prof. Daniel Apaak, for his guidance and continuous support towards the realization of the initiative.
This policy was first introduced by former SRC President Abraham Norman Nortey, and has been hailed by students as one of the most impactful welfare interventions in recent years.
Its reintroduction by the 64th administration led by Emmanuel Nana Adjei Acheampong has been welcomed with excitement by the student body.
The SRC has assured students that the initiative takes immediate effect and will be sustained throughout the 2025/2026 academic year.
The 64th administration has reiterated its mantra of putting students first, with a series of welfare policies including the SRC Scholarship Support, which is currently ongoing.
