Minority leader likens double track system to traffic light

Minority leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu has described the double track system of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy as a “traffic light school system”.

Speaking on TV3 New Day, Monday September 16, the former Minister for Employment and Labour Relations appeared to have a lot of issues with the Akufo-Addo-led government’s handling of the Free SHS.

According to him, a system where students go to school in alternating batches of Gold and Green is no different from a traffic light.

“When you come and get this traffic light of Red, Gold and Green tracking…”, he said.

Asked to explain why he chose to describe the system as a traffic light system, the Tamale South MP said, “Yes, it stops you and then if you’re a young lady and you’re not lucky you get pregnant and you fall out. Is this what you want for the future?” He asked rhetorically.

Reacting to an endorsement of the double track system by the founder of Ashesi University, Patrick Awuah, Mr. Iddirisu said though he has respect for Mr. Awuah’s views, that will not detract the NDC from abolishing the system should they come to power.

He however agreed with Mr. Awuah that the government did not communicate well to the public on the implementation of the system.

The NDC in its 2020 manifesto has promised to phase out the double track system, maintain the Free SHS policy and extend it to cover private schools.
