The entire results of 48,855 candidates who sat for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been withheld over various malpractices, the West African Examination Council has revealed.

The affected candidates, representing 14.12 per cent of the total candidates who wrote the exams, were said to have taken to the examination halls, foreign materials such as prepared notes, printed material and mobile phones.

Some of them were also found to have colluded with others and planned cheating with the connivance of some supervisors and school authorities.

WAEC in a statement Monday to announce the release of the provisional results said it was investigating the various malpractices and where the candidates are found culpable, their results will be cancelled.

“The withheld results of candidates may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations,” the statement said.

It said candidates could access their provisional results online on the WAEC website, adding the results will be despatched to the schools soon.

Improvement in Maths

Mathematics recorded the most significant result this year with 65.31% of students scoring A1 to C6 as compared to the 38.33% recorded in 2018.

There was a slight improvement in Integrated Science as well with 63.17% of students scoring A1 to C6 against 50.52% recorded last year.

Overall, there was some level of improvement in the performance of candidates who scored A1 to C6 in all four core subjects; Mathematics, English Language, Integrated Science and Social Studies.

A total of 346,094 candidates took part in the examination, which is 9.2% higher than recorded in 2018. Figures from WAEC showed 2, 322 candidates who registered for the exams were absent.

Imposters

Meanwhile the Council has warned parents and candidates to be on alert for persons who may claim to change results for their wards at a fee.

“The Council is alerting members of the public especially candidates to be wary of imposters who promise to change examination results for a fee. Candidates are to note that all WAEC results are well secured and can be authenticated. Persons with forged results will be exposed,” the Council warned.
