Former Coach of the Black Stars Claude Le Roy has paid glowing tribute to Junior Agogo, who passed away on Thursday after suffering stroke a couple of years ago.
The Frenchman says he loves players he has coached but Junior Agogo “was something special for me”.
Le Roy was the gaffer in 2008 when Agogo hit the heights in his professional career.
Le Roya introduced him into the Black Stars team.
The then Nottingham Forest striker partnered current General Captain Asamoah Gyan in front at the 26th Cup of Nations hosted by Ghana.
“I was thinking he was the perfect complement of Asamoah Gyan,” Le Roy said in an interview with TV3’s Juliet Bawuah.
“Junior was very powerful, he goes back to take the ball and to keep the ball.”
He said the partnership of the two was “very successful”, winning Ghana Bronze at the tournament.
Agogo had stints at Apollon Limassol in Cyprus and Egypt’s Zamalek.
The Frenchman, who won the Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 1988, said he advised the Ghanaian against that terminal move to Egypt.
He recounted how Junior Agogo was unknown before the Cup of Nations in Ghana but became an instant hit and was all over after the tournament.
“I spoke with him a few weeks ago,” he revealed.
Junior Agogo died in London at 40 years.
