The Municipal Chief Executive for Gushegu in the Northern Region, Musah Issah, is alleged to have prevented the construction of an 8-kilometer feeder road that joins the Kunayili and Saala communities to the Gushegu township.
The Kunayili and Saala communities are two new settlements in Gushegu but residents are cut off from accessing the rest of the Municipality during the rainy season.
The construction was a collaboration between the Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malimali Yussif, and Might Construction Company located in Tamale.
But information reaching 3news.com reveals some Constituency Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the instructions of the Municipal Chief Executive chased away officials of the construction firm on Friday, September 13, when he arrived to commence work on the deplorable stretch of road.
The NDC Parliamentary Candidate, according to some residents, participated in a communal labour organized after the party’s parliamentary primaries and upon a plea from the chiefs and people of the community decided to reshape the road.
A grader was subsequently moved to site Friday, September 13 by the contractor for grading work to start but “that was fiercely resisted by some executives of the New Patriotic Party”.
“The MCE on hearing that the contractor has arrived sanctioned the police who eventually stopped the contractor from doing his work,” a resident, Abdul Ganiu, has said.
The NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Malimali Yussif, reveals the Municipal Chief Executive said “road construction was a sole responsibility of government and so no individual has the right to construct any road”.
Malimali Yussif explains friends supported him with some funds to begin the work.
“I raised some money from some friends and so I decided to start the work but the MCE and his party executives asked the contractor to stop the work saying I am a civilian and not within my remit to construct any road.
“The MCE added that the road was awarded to a contractor who will start work on September 17, after I decided to follow up,” Malimali Yussif said.
“I was part of the communal labour, the MCE gave us gravel and he knows the road is bad so why will he wait for me to start before he knows the road is bad to award it on contract?” he quizzed.
Efforts to reach the MCE has proven futile.
