The Northern Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over his call for Dagombas to vote for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the 2020 elections.
According to Dr Bawumia, it took President Akufo-Addo to restore peace to Dagbon after several years of conflict.
The vice president was speaking at the annual Bamba Quranic recitation in Tamale over the weekend.
But the NDC in the region has taken exception to the comments by the Vice President, saying he should not make political capital of the fragile peace in Dagbon.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 25 and signed by NDC Regional Secretary Mohammed Abdul-Salam, peace in Dagbon degenerated under the watch of Nana Akufo-Addo as the Attorney General of Ghana “with his lackadaisical and mockish response to prosecuting the suspects at the time”.
“The NPP watched on as the peace degenerated with the callous murder of Na Yakubu II and his retinue.
“It is even more preposterous for the NPP to be playing politics with the Dagbon conflict when it is undoubtedly clear how fragile the situation still is.”
The largest opposition party claims a former regional chairman of the party is even holding himself as Chief of Nanton in the region although the new Yaa-Naa, Abukari Mahama II, has named an occupant.
“Ironically the Vice President who is the chairman of the Police Council is not interested in using the police to restore order and normalcy in Nanton but rather interested in making a political capital out of the installation of a new Yaa Naa whose authority is being challenged by some of his own party members.”
The NDC said Dr Bawumia’s canvassing for Dagbon votes is just a diversionary tactic “from the numerous corruption cases, abuse of power and general hardships facing Ghanaians and we call on Dagbon to treat his call with the utmost contempt it deserves”.
