The Inspector General of Police has announced new measures to curb police unprofessional conducts on the roads across the country following widespread complaints.
A statement issued Tuesday directed that various police teams on traffic duties, highway patrols, barrier duties among others, must with immediate effect, be led by a senior police officer at every duty point where they are assigned.
“Senior police officers supervising such duties should make themselves readily accessible to the public in order to receive complaints relating to extortion, deliberate delays of motorists, the use of uncivil language as well as publicly making political statements that have the propensity to compromise their neutrality as officers,” it said.
It said a special taskforce will be instituted to conduct periodic checks on the roads by interviewing drivers, passengers and other road users to collect further information on allegations of unprofessional conduct by police officers.
To ensure accountability, especially on highways, the statement said special phone numbers will be announced to enable the public send video of police misconduct, pictures, WhatApp text messages among others…as well as exemplary ones for others to emulate.
The IGP appealed to the public to give their maximum cooperation for the new directive, assuring that when complaints are received, they “will be expeditiously dealt with”.
