Residents of Ehyiamu in Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis in the Western Region are suffering from the deteriorating effect of Friday’s torrential rain: families including school children have been displaced
The Sekondi-Takoradi NADMO Coordinator James Obeng in the company of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Sekondi-Takoradi, Anthony K.K. Sam who visited the area realized that one of the major causes of the floods was a small bridge constructed by a Chinese Ceramic Company, Wang Kang. This narrow bridge hindered the flow of Anankor River.
On Monday, October 14 Mr. Obeng and his entourage numbering 25 visited the community to do a comprehensive assessment of the effect of the flood. In a meeting with the affected people at their community center, the victims expressed their revulsion at the situation and said they are fed-up with the rice and oil donation from NADMO whenever there was such occurrence.
“We don’t need the rice and oil again but rather a lasting solution to the flood,” one of them fumed as the rest expressed similar sentiment.
They want the government to dredge the Anankor river and expand the bridge on Anankor river.
Mr. Obeng therefore assured them that in less than a week, the bridge would be demolished, adding that plans are far advanced for the construction of a bigger one. He also promised the community that the river would be dredged soon.
The assembly’s assessment of the situation revealed that about 292 residents were affected by the floods. The total cost of damage stood at 112,676.
According to Mr. Obeng, a report on the situation would be forwarded to the Regional NADMO office that would subsequently be sent to the Headquarters for the necessary support.
He was quick to add that, there would not be any monetary compensation nor replacement of any electrical appliances like TV, fridges, etc.
“We will give them mattresses, blankets, rubber buckets, rubber bowls but things like electronic gadgets are out,” he explained.
