Misunderstanding has forced electoral officials to indefinitely suspend voting at two constituencies in the Ashanti Region in Saturday’s parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress.
At the Kwadaso constituency, one of the aspirants, Khalid Alhassan Kusi, and some delegates protested the acceptance of the national voter’s ID card creating a misunderstanding.
Tension escalated between the two contestants and their supporters forcing the EC to suspend the exercise, our correspondent William Evans-Nkum reported.
“We agreed to use the party’s card as a prerequisite for voting, but the EC insisted they have been directed to accept the voter’s ID card. This was contested by Khalid Alhassan Kusi who suspected a foul play.
“Later the police and EC advised that the exercise is suspended for security reasons as tension escalates” Moro Issah, the constituency chairman told 3news.com.
Voting at Afigya kwabre South was suspended due to a misunderstanding over the voter’s register.
Primaries were scheduled by the party’s Functional Executive Committee to take place in 15 constituencies but two constituencies – Atwima Kwawoma and Suame – have been put on hold.
At Adansi Asokwa, Odotobri, Nhyiaeso, Manhyia South and Manhyia North where the candidates are unopposed, the five aspirants will be introduced to delegates as automatic candidates for the party in the 2020 general elections.
