A portion of Aburi’s scenic highway has reopened 24 hours after a landslide blocked a portion of the busy road.
The landslide was triggered by heavy rains Friday afternoon, sending mud and rocks from the Akuapim Ridge onto the road at a sharp curve between Ayi Mensah and Peduase, just about 400 metres away from the popular Peduase Lodge.
The situation forced NADMO officials and police personnel to reroute traffic from Adenta towards Aburi to the other side of the dual carriage road.
This caused heavy vehicular traffic Friday evening on the major road that connects Accra to the Eastern Region.
Workers and officials of the Ghana Highway Authority moved to the scene Saturday morning to access the extent of damage and ascertain the root cause of the landslide which has been recurring in the area.
By late afternoon Saturday, workers had cleared large amount of mud and rock particles as well as other debris from the road, freeing the area for free flow of traffic.
When TV3 got to the scene, the workers were also de-silting the drains along the stretch of the road which had been filled with large amount of mud.
Chief Engineer of the Ghana Highways Authority, Emmanuel Laryea Odai, accused developers of the recurrent situation on that stretch.
In 2016, a contract was awarded to place steel mesh on the rocks to prevent rock particles from the boulders from falling off onto the road.
But engineer Odai said the contract had to be terminated due to the failure of the contractor to meet the desired specifications.
He however indicated drains are being constructed on the road to ensure there is no obstruction of vehicles in future should there be a landslide.
He also said measures are in place to find a permanent solution to the situation.
Engineer Odai called on municipal and district chief executives to help stop the development of structures on that stretch.
