Ghana’s Terminal 1 at the Kotoka International Airport is now being used to offer operational and logistical support to the United States military, the Aviation Minister, Kofi Adda has revealed.
Domestic flights operating from terminal 1 were relocated to Terminal 2 to give passengers comfort and ensure efficiency in operations. International flights were also moved from T2 to the newly constructed T3.
The marquee tent at the Terminal 1 which was used as the departure lounge for domestic flights, according to the Aviation Minister, was dilapidated and needed renovation but assessment showed the Ghana Airport Company was going to spend more to renovate the place.
“The Ghana Airport Company, therefore, took the renovation from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 to save money and also ensure efficiency in operations and passionate comfort,” he told parliamentarians on Wednesday.
Mr Adda also said the Ghana Airport Company then rented out the ground floor of Terminal 1 to McDan Aviation for use as a logistics operation centre for a period of 15 years from January 2019.
“Pursuant to the Ghana government agreement with the United States government, McDan has also signed a management agreement with the United States military and provides logistics and handling services to the US military through Terminal 1,” Mr Adda added.
The Ghana Airport Company, Mr Adda said, will earn 350,000 dollars from the rent annually.
Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Kwame Agbodza, asked the Minister whether the Aviation Ministry is a party to the agreement between McDan and the US military but he responded in the negative.
Mr Adda explained that the US military in their internal procurement processes identified McDan as the “company that can handle passenger services for them”.
