An editor-cum-head of political news at Media General, Edward Kwabi, has died.

Eddie Kwabi, as he was affectionately called, died Monday night at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was on admission receiving treatment for a short ailment, family members confirmed to 3news.com Tuesday.

He was in his thirties.

His colleagues were shocked and saddened Tuesday morning to learn of his passing. They mourned their friend and former colleague who has been working with TV3 for over a decade from a National Service person to an employee.

Described by his boss as “very ambitious,” Mr Kwabi was made the Head of Political Desk of the synergised Media General newsroom a year ago, having demonstrated the ability and experience for the post.

“Eddy was one of the most hardworking producers I have met; very passionate about his work and very ambitious. He was an excellent producer, especially of live events,” the General Manager in charge of News, Abraham Asare, said of the late Kwabi.

Managing Editor for TV/Online News Matilda Haynes, who appeared lost for words, said: “He’s beyond description; committed, hardworking and innovative journalist who’s sensitive to people’s needs”.

A shocked Ms. Haynes, who last visited Mr Kwabi in January, recalled that although “he was not well, he was still in his usual best and sweet”.

Head of Business Desk at Media General Alfred Ocansey recounted how Mr Kwabi produced his first programme in 2016 when he joined the Adesa We-based media conglomerate.

“He made sure I was comfortable everyday. The synergy between us was perfect on Key Point, News360, all on TV3 and Late Edition on 3FM, all of which I hosted and he produced,” Mr Ocansey said.

A wailing Wendy Laryea, one of the newscasters, said: “Your death came as a shock to me and it hurts so badly”.

Mr Kwabi was part of the presidential press corps involved in a deadly accident in August, 2015 which led to the death of a young Ghanaian Times journalist Samuel Nuamah.

“You’ve left a vacuum…fare thee well,” Josephine Frempong said of her late colleague.

The man, who was popularly referred to as The General in the Media General newsroom, joined the company in September, 2012 as broadcast journalist having previously done his internship and national service with the company.

He played various roles in the newsroom including producing news bulletins and events and serving as the news anchor for TV3 late night news, News@10.

In 2017, when the company underwent restructuring, Mr Kwabi was made an editor.

Mr Kwabi left behind a wife and three children

Mr Kwabi had his secondary education at St. Martin’s Senior High School and proceeded to the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) in Accra where earned his Diploma and first degree in Communication Studies.

In pursuit of higher education, he went back to the premier journalism institute to study for an MA in Media Management. He graduated in 2018.

Mr Kwabi left behind a wife and three children.
