Two confirmed cases of the deadly novel coronavirus in Ghana have forced the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital in Accra to limit visits to patients on admission at the facility.
With immediate effect from Friday, March 13, patients on admission can receive only two relatives as visitors, the hospital management announced in a statement a day after Ghana recorded its first cases.
“In the case of the Department of Child Health only parents/guardians of the patient are permitted to visit. This measure has become necessary because patients are already vulnerable and can therefore easily be infected,” it said.
The hospital is encouraging patients and their relatives to support them in implementing the precautionary measure for the safety of all, particularly patients and caregivers.
Two persons who returned to the country from Norway and Turkey tested positive of the covid-19 virus on Thursday.
Both patients, according to Ghana’s health minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, are in stable condition and currently being kept in isolation.
Contact-tracing has already begun by authorities in a bid to contain a possible spread as the two were said to have been in the country over a week.
Although government has not given details about the infected persons, the Norwegian Embassy in Ghana confirmed Friday in a Facebook post that “one of our colleagues has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.”
It announced a closure of the embassy to further notice.
