Latest statistics have revealed that six people die each day in Ghana from road traffic accidents, with drink driving, speeding and motor cyclists riding without crash helmet being the topmost contributing factors.

A total of 2,803 persons were killed in 12,502 road accidents between January and November 2019.

Another 12,760 sustained injuries in accidents involving 20,195 vehicles.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service has blamed the increase in accidents and deaths to indiscipline on the roads.

Accidents on our roads increase during Christmas and other festive seasons due to several factors including drink  driving,  speeding  and non-adherence to other road safety regulations.

Five persons died when a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus collided head-on with another minibus on December 25, 2019 at Mankuma on the Bole-Sawla highway in the Savannah Region.

Many other persons were injured and sent to Bole District Hospital for treatment.

Seven other persons were killed in another road accident on the Konongo-Kumasi highway in the Ashanti Region involving OA and VVIP buses on Christmas eve

The accident, according to the Police, occurred as a result of a wrongful overtaking causing the two passenger buses to collide head on.

According to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police, there are strong indications this year’s figures would exceed the annual national average.
