The Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Edward Oduro-Kwarteng, has asked Ghanaians to take precautionary measures against the deadly coronavirus and not allow themselves to be misled about the existence of the disease.

Some Ghanaians have in the last weeks questioned the existence of the disease which has infected more than 6000 people in the country and killed 31 persons.

For the nonbelievers, the virus is not real, and they have thus refused to practice preventive protocols announced by health officials to stop the spread of the virus which currently has no cure.

Addressing a gathering of police personnel and journalists to launch the disinfection and fumigation of police installations in the Volta Region by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, DCOP Oduro-Kwarteng observed despite the realities of covid-18 and education, some people still don’t believe its existence.

“Some people are still doubtful of the existence of the disease,” he stated, arguing that such persons are clearly “being misled”.

He stated that covid-19 is a real killer and its devastation, particularly on economies and health facilities across the world, has been scary.

“We need to come to terms with the reality and follow all the personal hygiene and safety protocols to avoid infection,” he advised

The Regional Commander underscored the need for people to ensure social distancing and the other various protocols in order to win the fight.

The Volta Region, he said, recorded few incidents of noncompliance of the protocols, forcing the police and authorities to take the necessary steps which brought sanity.

“Let me once again remind all of us that we are not in normal times and so we must all put our hands to the wheel to drive the invisible killer away as soon as possible. Let us follow and comply with all the protocols and laws aimed at containing covid-19” he appealed.

DCOP Oduor-Kwarteng explained it is only when Ghanaians abide by these protocols that “we can return to normal life”.

He has meanwhile commended government and all health officials whose “good work” and sacrifices, he said, has helped saved a lot more lives in the country, stating he is hopeful the virus will be contained.

The Commander also underscored the important role that the waste management giant, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has been playing to fight the virus.

“We need to applaud them for a yeoman’s job. Today is a demonstration of their commitment to ensure that we win this covid-19 fight in Ghana” he stated.

The exercise

The disinfection exercise which started from the Ho District Police Headquarters and the Central police station as well as their police barracks Friday will see 167 police installations within the region benefit.

These included 59 police stations and offices and 108 police barracks.

Zoomlion has for the past week conducted similar disinfection exercise in the Western, Ashanti, Bono, Greater Accra, and Tema regions.

The nationwide exercise which is a collaboration between the Police Administration and Zoomlion Ghana Limited seeks to create a safe environment to prevent police personnel and the public from contracting the disease.

Personnel, logistics deployed

General Manager for Zoomlion in the Volta Region, Solomon Deneyo said his team and logistics have been deployed to all the 18 districts to start the disinfection exercise simultaneously and hope to finish within five days.

He said there have been cooperation from all the stakeholders, including the Regional Minister, and that “the citizens are happy that Zoomlion is partnering strategic institutions to undertake this disinfection”.

“I want to use this opportunity to extend invitations other corporate institutions to come on board because this fight cannot be done by only the central government. We need all hands on board to be able to fight this covid-19.

He urged public institutions which are yet to disinfect their facilities to “take advantage of Zoomlion’s solutions so that holistically we can solve this problem as a nation”.

Mr Denyo urged the various MMDAs in particular to join hands with Zoomlion to disinfect the various isolation and quarantine centres are disinfected.
