Two more persons have lost their lives to the novel coronavirus disease in Ghana, bringing the total number of deaths to 34.
The two both died two days after reporting of the disease at separate hospitals in Accra.
This was part of the latest update given by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on its portal.
“Death 33 is a 64-year-old male, a known diabetic who presented with severe respiratory symptoms at a hospital in Accra,” the Service said on Tuesday, May 26. “He was admitted but died after two days on admission.
“Death 34 is a 60-year-old female, a known hypertensive, presented with severe respiratory symptoms and was admitted at a hospital in Accra. However after two days on admission, she died.”
According to the latest update, the country’s total case count has reached 7,117 since Day 1 of confirming the first cases of the virus.
Out of this, 2,317 have been declared recovered, leaving the current active cases at 4,766.
The active cases involve three critical patients and 17 with severe conditions.
Greater Accra Region’s case count has gone past the 5,000 mark as the capital continues to lead officially with 5,008 cases.
The Ashanti Region went past the 1,000 mark early on Tuesday though recording reduced cases now. The latest update sees the Region’s total tally at 1,085.
Western Region is now the third highest region, having been described by the Director General of the Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, as the current hotspot region of the country.
Its total case count is currently 344.
“But the response remains swift and we will gather all our energies to go there and contain it,” Dr Kuma-Aboagye said at the press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information earlier on Tuesday.
Central Region has seven fewer cases than its western neighbours.
