The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Techiman Eleven Wonders, Albert Commey, has advised stakeholders in Ghana football to truncate the league if the situation surrounding Covid-19 still pends.
This, according to him, will give the various teams the opportunity to prepare adequately ahead of the 2020/21 season.
He also pleaded with football lovers to be patient with authorities in coming out with a decision because to him, if they rush to restart the league and care is not taken, the situation may worsen.
The former CEO of Accra Hearts of Oak was speaking to Onua FM when he made these suggestions.
“We shouldn’t joke with the situation now because we cannot afford to lose a soul in the industry to the virus. We have a responsibility, we need to make sure that measures are put in place to curb the spread of the virus. The [Ghana] Football Association is consulting stakeholders and if they agree for it to be cancelled, then we do that.”
Responding to why the league should still be on hold till August till it is possibly truncated, Mr Commey said: “The corporate world is monitoring and watching our reaction on how we will deal with situation so we have to show resilience, we have to show that we will be able to stand by them in times of difficulties when they sponsor the league and there is a problem.”
Touching on the welfare of players, Mr Commey said their salaries have become a problem and they deserve to be fed well since the virus is all about boosting the immune system.
So players need to have the strength to continue with the self-training instructions given to them by their coaches, he noted.
He also backed the GFA in seeking support from the government to cushion players and club owners.
“We pay tax so the country really gains from football. 17.5 per cent of the money gained from gate proceeds by clubs goes to the state as tax so calculate the number of games played every week and even hoteliers and those who sell at the stadium also benefit from football.”
