President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his intention to continue the expressway from Accra to the north.
He said he expects the Accra-Kumasi expressway he has initiated to open up the country for successive governments to continue similar projects.
On Monday, September 14, President Mahama received the right-of-way clearance from the Ghana Armed Forces, whose officers had cleared about 175.6 kilometres of forest cover for construction work to begin.
The project by the military officers was expected to take approximately 20 weeks but the 48 Engineers Regiment took 19 weeks to make the grounds ready.
Addressing the gathering during a handing-over ceremony at Kwaso near Ejisu, President Mahama said: “We are already doing Accra-to-Kumasi expressway.
“Our intention is to continue this expressway from Accra to the north. We also are working on the Eastern Corridor. By next year, we would have completed the Eastern Corridor as it is and then we will also work on the Western Corridor.
“If we do this, it will make it easy to transport goods and passengers all over our country with ease.”
He noted that the Finance Minister will come out with a special finance plan to revitalise railways, for which a provision has been made.
The construction phase, to be strictly financed by the government of Ghana, is scheduled to start in January, 2027.
