The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has launched a strong critique of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, arguing that the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 presidential candidate has “no credible record” to present to Ghanaians.
Speaking on a panel discussion on Metro TV on Friday, November 21, Mr Kwakye Ofosu insisted that Dr Bawumia’s performance in government does not provide a persuasive basis for his renewed ambition to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
According to him, the former Vice President presided over some of the most disappointing economic outcomes in Ghana’s recent history, leaving citizens disillusioned.
He argued that Dr Bawumia’s campaign messages have shifted repeatedly because he “cannot defend the reality of the economic conditions” under the government he helped lead.
In his view, Ghanaians have become increasingly aware that the lofty promises once made by Dr Bawumia never translated into meaningful results.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu noted that the difficulties encountered during the former Vice President’s tenure undermine his ongoing effort to return as the party’s flagbearer.
“If your record does not resonate with the people, you cannot take it to the political market,” he said, stressing that the 2024 defeat should serve as a clear indication that the public has rejected Dr Bawumia’s economic stewardship.
He further accused Dr Bawumia of shifting blame rather than taking responsibility for challenges that unfolded during the period he spearheaded the government’s economic management team.
The Government Communications Minister argued that leaders must demonstrate accountability, and that Ghanaians are no longer persuaded by attempts to rewrite the past.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu concluded by saying that the NPP must confront the reality of its own governance shortcomings instead of promoting a narrative that attempts to revive Dr Bawumia’s political prospects.
He maintained that any attempt to market the former Vice President for 2028 would be “a difficult, if not impossible, task”.
