The Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, has announced major government-backed investments aimed at improving accommodation and operational capacity within the Ghana Armed Forces.
Speaking on the state of the military, Lt. Gen. Agyapong said government plans are underway to construct more than 2,000 housing units across military garrisons nationwide, including about 700 units in five designated locations in Accra, to help address long-standing accommodation deficits.
“Next year, we will see massive improvement in our accommodation situation,” he said, noting that the initiative is designed to ensure personnel have “decent places of abode.” He added that over the next five years, an additional 8,000 housing units are expected if implementation proceeds as planned.
Beyond housing, the CDS disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has approved a comprehensive retooling package for the security services to strengthen national defence and security operations. Planned acquisitions include new helicopters and long-range jets for the Air Force, offshore patrol boats to enhance maritime security, and additional armoured personnel carriers for the Army.
The package also covers weapons, vehicles, protective gear, defence stores and ammunition to improve readiness across the services.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong said the investments reflect a deliberate effort to leverage Ghana’s military expertise and manpower while improving troop welfare, operational effectiveness and overall security capacity.
He emphasized that the combined focus on housing and equipment is critical to boosting morale, ensuring safety and positioning the Armed Forces to respond effectively to evolving security challenges.
