Parliament’s Committee on Roads and Transportation has begun reviewing the contract agreement for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, engaging the leadership of the Committee on Finance as part of the assessment process.
The joint engagement, chaired by the Committee on Roads and Transportation Chairman, Hon. Mensah Adjei, focused on examining the scope, financing structure and expected economic impact of the major road infrastructure project. The expressway is projected to significantly reduce travel time between Ghana’s political and commercial capitals, lower transportation costs, create employment opportunities and generate long-term revenue for the state through road monetization.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, described the project as a critical national investment, stressing the central role of modern road infrastructure in supporting economic growth, trade and regional connectivity. He expressed strong support for the expressway, noting its potential to transform mobility and improve road safety along the busy corridor.
Finance Minister Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson confirmed that the project will receive full government funding under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme. He told the committees that the expressway is expected to be completed within three years, adding that the funding arrangement reflects the government’s commitment to accelerated infrastructure development.
Hon. Mensah Adjei reaffirmed the committee’s full backing for the project, describing it as a priority initiative for Parliament. He assured stakeholders of the committee’s readiness to support all necessary processes to ensure the timely commencement and smooth implementation of the expressway.
The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is regarded as one of Ghana’s most ambitious road projects, with expectations that it will enhance productivity, improve logistics efficiency and boost national development once completed.
