The Bono Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has successfully secured the conviction of four persons including a student for stealing 26 laptops and other items from the offices of the National Identification Authority (NIA) at Newtown, a suburb of Sunyani.
The student, Anthony Asante Jr., was arrested on Saturday, March 4, 2023 after months of manhunt following a tip-off from a citizen.
He was found with several items later identified as property stolen between January and October, 2022.
Valued at GH¢405,570, the items were said to have been sold to Eliezer Ameyaw, a mobile phone repairer, Jovies Amoh Afriyie, also known as Lord, and Gordon Kwaku Dodzi.
The four were subsequently put before District Court B in Sunyani.
Prime suspect Anthony Asane Jr. was convicted on multiple counts and sentenced to two years imprisonment on each count to run concurrently.
The remaining three accused persons were convicted for dishonestly receiving and fined GH¢20,000 each and in default serve 18 months imprisonment.
The Bono Regional Police Command assured the public that efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects and recover the outstanding laptops.
It urged members of the public with relevant information to assist police in bringing all persons connected to the crime to justice.
